UNDERGRADUATE APPLICATIONS
1. TRANSCRIPT/CLASS RANK
Academic transcripts are basic application components, and class rank is also considered especially at competitive universities.
2. WRITING SAMPLE/STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Higher academic level writing competencies are very valuable, and the statement of purpose (along with transcripts) are the initial gateways to admissions officers' 'further consideration'!
3. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Competitive universities also rely heavily on academic references, as well as any that demonstrate non-academic participation in respected organizations or competitions.
4. LIST OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Participation in non-academic activities such as clubs and/or athletics can provide evidence of personal characteristics considered relevant for academic success. Service in non-profit community organizations is highly desirable.
5. AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Any notable competitive awards or achievements, as well as any honorary mention from extracurricular activities should be emphasized. There are many competitions for technically-inclined students in which competencies can be demonstrated.
6. PREPARE FOR AN INTERVIEW
You might be surprised to discover that some of the elite universities, in particular, may require either an on-site or remote interview. Contact the admissions department when in doubt.
7. STANDARDIZED TEST SCORES
During the COVID crisis, most universities began to allow students to bypass the SAT exams. Nowadays, with reintroduction of testing requirements, the SAT is much shorter and possibly more 'user-friendly'. Overseas students will need to supply TOEFL or IELTS scores with their applications.
